Brighid of the West, Mother of Songs and Music
She who breathes in the reed, on the wind, in the hearts of women and in the minds of poets... Fiona Macleod
Brighid, Celtic goddess and Christian saint, is so much more than an ancient symbol of hope from pastimes, an image depicted in stained glass windows, dressed in flowing robes and carrying a candle.
These are potent and beautiful images but Brighid, and all that she represents is also of our time.
As 2026 begins, the world seems to spin into chaos and many of us have a sense of being adrift. Brighid's story of bringing light to darkness, order to chaos, new life to the wasteland, is needed now more than ever.

'Bride's Footprints' is an old Hebridean folk name for snowdrops.
Legends of the Western Isles of Scotland tell us that Brighid (or Bride as she is affectionately known) walks the land on Brighid's Eve carrying the light of new life and inspiration in the palm of her hand.
Snowdrops spring up wherever her feet touch the world ... making a pathway of bright, tender petals, pushing up through the frozen land.
We may imagine that a light-filled track of moonlight leads us across the wild sea to the island we have been seeking, where the white - petalled path shows us the way through valleys of shadow to emerge onto a mountain top. We stand with Brighid in the light of a new dawn.

Join me for a time of peace and reflection
In the Northern hemisphere, February can be the harshest of times, bringing the darkest and coldest of days. At Christmas and/or the Midwinter Solstice we may have celebrated the rebirth of Light into the world.
Now the Christmas lights have faded and right now, the world seems to be spinning into evermore chaos. I find myself reaching towards Imbolc (or Candlemas), the first spring festival which holds yet another light-filled promise. Already I feel a change in the wind, sense the approach of Brighid, bringing her light to the world, heralding the season of new life and growth.
This year, I am feeling called to sit with others and share some of what I’ve learned from Brighid over many years - to share what the land has taught me, through music, poetry, art - to give something back, with gratitude for all that this path has brought me. I hope to share a glimpse of what Brighid has taught me ... and create space for you to reflect on what her invitation may be to you, to inspire you in your own life.
