Travelling to Iona and Being There
The Isle of Iona is remote, beautiful and wild. It is a tiny island without any of the usual facilities that most of us are used to in our daily lives.
The weather is wild and unpredictable. It is said that it is possible to experience all four seasons in one day on Iona - and I know from personal experience that this is true! So make sure you bring good walking boots, warm clothes, hat, waterproof coat and trousers - as well as your sun hat and your sun cream! There is only one food small food shop on the island, there is no doctor, bank or dentist. There are a few lovely craft shops, two hotels and a few guest houses. |
There is only one road - and some beautiful white beaches, with crystal clear waters. And if you are lucky - there are dolphins in Iona Sound ...
The first fact you should know when planning your trip to Iona is that visitor cars are not permitted on the island. Iona is a special place and is appreciated by visitors for its peacefulness and tranquillity. |
As a tiny island the infrastructure is fragile and because of this Iona is subject to a "Prohibition of Vehicles" Order that controls the type of vehicles allowed onto the Island. This Order was first introduced in 1978 to ensure the preservation of Iona’s unique environment.
Travel Insurance ~ We strongly advise you to seek Travel Insurance for your trip to Iona, to cover you in the event that you have to cancel your place.
